I’ve always liked to take a minimalist approach to protecting my devices. Bulky cases just aren’t for me on a daily basis, although there are times when I welcome having something like the LifeProof iPhone case. At the same time, I don’t like using my devices in a naked state. You never know what is going to happen and, since I tend to sell my phones and tablets to prepare for the next generation, keeping my devices scratch-free translates into extra money at sale time.

In the case of the Textured Tuxedo Case for the New iPad, Case-Mate has found a way to protect the tablet, provide a stand AND keep everything as thin and light as possible. It is a rather amazing achievement that reflects the company’s design sensitivities and years of experience.

Let’s take a look.

It’s hard to believe there is a folio case on my new iPad isn’t it? It IS there but, thanks to the “Magic Tape” the Textured Tuxedo doesn’t need clips, straps or any other kind of mechanical method for securing the iPad in place.

That means when you fold the case back there is nothing between you and the tablet except air… and fingerprints.

It is all because of this rectangular adhesive slab which comes secured to the case and that grabs the back of the iPad in a manner that feels more than secure enough. I will admit that I had some concerns about the adhesive losing its stickiness if the iPad was removed and replaced more than once, but I found no loss of grip after doing just that a dozen or so times. That does not mean it won’t happen over time however, and I would recommend not removing the iPad more than is necessary once it is secured in place.

I should also note that it took me a few tries before I had the iPad lined up with the edges of the case to my liking. It wasn’t that the iPad was totally skewed in relation to the case, but it was a bit off the first few times, and that bugged the hell out of me.

The result is a case that wraps around the iPad in as thin and light manner as possible.
Here’s another look.

The Case-Mate Textured Tuxedo Case for the New iPad may be thin and light, but that doesn’t mean it can’t have a few extra tricks up its tuxedo sleeves. The Case-Mate Textured Tuxedo Case for the New iPad doubles as a stand in the same way many other folio-style cases can. As Case-Mate puts it, “Doubling as a stand with multiple viewing angles, the case easily flips and bends with its multiple foldable segments.” That’s a pretty neat trick, especially in light of the barely-there nature of the case.

And there’s more. The case has built-in magnets that offer the sleep/awake functionality that is so convenient on both the iPad 2 and the new iPad.

Finally there is the look and feel of the case itself. The material looks classy, and it has a finished appearance which says “high-end case”. And as the name suggests, the material is slightly textured in a manner that feel quite good when you are holding it. That is important when you consider the fact that this thin, light case costs $60.

In all I am rather impressed by the Textured Tuxedo Case for the New iPad. It protects the iPad from bumps and scratches, lets you keep a convenient stand with you at all times, and it feels great when you are holding it. It is available in black, turquoise blue, grey, hot pink and orange. The review sample is turquoise blue. Why? Because Judie liked that color, and the review sample is on its way to Texas. Personally, I would have gone with black or grey. Yeah, I’m boring.

I will use the shorter name from now on that is found at Macally.com: Magcover-3. There has been Magcovers for the earlier iPad models, and they have all been quite good. They have also had the same issues, and that is that the material used is on the cheap side. Even if faux leather is described as premium it is far from the Napa leather used by Sena for example. Furthermore there is a distinct smell from faux leather that takes quite a while to mellow, or get used to. Considering that you usually have the iPad quite close to your nose the smell can get annoying. It is even worse when I lie down to watch some movies with the case on my chest. Still, it will mellow and turn nicer with time.

As for the actual case you get a lot of protection, and functionality at a reasonable price. The back is made from a hard plastic frame holding onto the edges of the iPad. There is no chance of the iPad slipping out even when only half the case is holding onto it in landscape stand mode. Furthermore the plastic never interferes with the screen when playing games, as the only hug the edges.

The front, and back are covered by faux leather that is quite resistant to scratches and impact damage. It is also water resistant in the sense that water doesn’t stick, but run off it. The thread used seems strong, but one ugly knot can be found in the stitching ruining the look slightly.
The inside of the case is covered in a soft inner lining that is friendly towards both the screen, and the back of the iPad. On the inside of the lining there are a couple of magnets that help keeping the case shut. The case is also compatible with the Apple power on/off function just like the Apple Smart Cover.

For functionality all functions are accessible when the iPad is inside the case. AV adapters, chargers and other accessories work well. As with all folio types of cases I am hesitant to say whether it will work with all docks, or even the Apple Keyboard dock due to size.

The Magcover-3 is easy to use, and I think it is a good companion to school or work if you don’t use any keyboard cover. The iPad is well protected, and you don’t have to sacrifice any functionality when using it. My only concern is the faux leather, and the smell it brings. Still you get a lot of quality when it comes to design, and functionality.

I’ve been feeling on edge this last week since upgrading to the new iPad. It’s one beautiful device, no arguing that, but a device which feels vulnerable to damage. For the last two years I’ve had the original iPad encased in an Incase Book Jacket, and it’s survived a gasp-inducing fall from the desk (thanks cats), a few errant splashes, and the occasional bump while carrying it around the apartment. Relief came way this morning upon the delivery of this new iPad (and iPad 2) compatible Book Jacket, this one embellished by Romon Kimin Yang’s (Rostarr) “Graphysics” design. The graphic designer in me loves the aesthetics, while the worried pragmatic feels relief knowing the Retina display device is now a little safer.

The iPad is one of the hottest tech gadgets on the market right now and more and more tablets are making the market. Targus have jumped on the bandwagon and started making bags and sleeves for the iPad. We recieved their Crave bag that we are going to look at today.

It has some nice features such as; soft padding, storage compartment for cables, and even handles so you can easily carry it around.

The case is wrapped in plastic and has this cardboard slip with features around it.  The Crave is made out of nylon that is durable and water and stain resistant, these are handy features if you travel a lot with your iPad as it will prevent it from beeing scratched or damaged.

On the front of the bag they have placed the storage compartment for cables or chargers. Inside of it padded with cloth to prevent scratches on your products. The bag is just a tad bigger than the iPad itself, you can’t even have a rubber bumper around it and seal the zippers.

Targus presents the, so to say, “ski outfit” for the iPad with its Crave Slipcase. The nylon-like surface with thick cushioning and stitching reminds us, like it or not, of the aforementioned winter garments. Targus speaks of a water resistant textile with abrasion-resistant, stain-protective, double foam-padded interior lining.
The Crave Slipcase also can evade all criticism in terms of workmanship. The sewn in zippers couldn’t be as easily moved as it was the case in the A7. The Crave Slipcase has two handles stowed in separate compartments, which quickly turn the protective apparel into a handbag. The integrated supply pocket would supply room for the iPad’s power adapter. In this case, special care should be taken when stored in the backpack.

Due to the soft padding, shocks are cushioned well on the surfaces. However, the Crave Slipcase hardly offers any protection against selective pressure. Thus, it’s recommendable not to store hard objects in the supply pocket since they could press on the iPad. Nevertheless, the case bids good protection against scratches and dirt, as well as moisture. Water drops and liquids practically roll off the surface without residue. The zipper around the entire case has to be rated positively. It allows an especially easy stowing, respectively taking out of the iPad.

The Targus Crave Slipcase is also only available in black. There are horizontal and vertical ornamental stitches on the exterior to loosen up the looks a bit. This case can also be found for a bit over 15 euro, in terms of price. Our concluding rating for the Crave Slipcase is as follows:

This bag reminds me of a down jacket; the external fabric is quilted nylon, and the bag is quite soft and almost squishy. The internal padding is soft and the iPad seems well protected. The downside is that the padding makes it about twice as wide as other cases; but you can crush it down to store it. The 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 in front zippered pocket is padded on the iPad side, the other side is quilted nylon

The zippers run from about seven o’clock up over the top and down to the edge, about two o’clock on the other side. This makes it easy to insert and remove the iPad, but it is protected because the top of the case doesn’t flop open. The two zippers are protected inside with large flaps, so they seem water resistant. All three zippers have backpack style nylon cords and ends attached to them, making them very easy to pull and no metal to scratch your iPad.

The Crave Sleeve comes with two handles for carrying, which live in two snapped pockets on top when not in use. The pockets keep the handles out of the way, nor can they pop out. The pockets run the length of the bag, so you can store other items in them, but only one snap secures the items inside.

The Targus web site shows this case available only in black, but the sample I received is light grey; listed as silver in their press release. Price: $34.99 The Good: Pull cords on the zippers. Water and stain-resistant case. Large pocket can hold thick items. Straps fold away when not in use. The Bad: Thicker than most cases. Rating: 4.5 stars
