Compact portable stand
Design and construction
When closed, the iMainGo XP speaker case looks like an inflated box, much bulkier than normal iPad cases that don’t feature speakers or integrated keyboards. The exterior features a rubbery coating that’s nice to touch, but catches fingerprints and dust easily, as you can see from some of the pictures I’ve taken.
When you open up the case you get a much bigger foot print, with the screen cover being spit in two and hanging on the left and right side of the horizontally mounted iPad. Two massive hinges allow for the stereo speakers to rotate in vertical plane 360 degrees, so they can face you or the back of the case, depending on your preference. The hinges are pretty tight, which makes for a good impression when it comes to build quality.
A detachable stand is supplied to allow for easily desk mounting. You can’t adjust the height, but the inclination angle can be freely adjusted. This stand can easily be folded and takes a small area of your backpack of bag. It’s also the most fragile part of this entire speaker case, being made from questionable plastic, including the adjustable gear wheel. During testing I didn’t had any problem with it, but you should be careful nonetheless.
The two speakers that form the screen cover can be closed and secured by using two sliders. Each speaker features two 38mm titanium coned nedoymium high output speakers, with 5 watts per channel for a total of 10 watts. While closed all buttons and ports of the iPad remain uncovered, but unfortunately some of them are hard to reach by people with thick fingers like mine.
The rechargeable battery
What makes the iMainGo XP speaker case special is the fact it uses a rechargeable battery that can power the two speaker for 8 hours at full volume. You can also listen to music while charging. The charger is pretty small and features a status LED to let you know when it’s done charging.
The charging port is mounted on the left speaker near two 3.5 mm audio jacks (not sure why they’re there, to tell the truth). I’ve found it hard to understand which hole to use for charging, but taking a closer look reveals guiding pictograms. An On/Off switch is located near these ports, as well as a status LED that turns green when the speaker case is turned on.
Sound volume and quality
As an owner of neodymium Altec Lansing computer speakers I knew what to expect from the four speakers: impressive volume and very good high and medium frequencies, but lack of bass. If you want bass you have to look somewhere else, but I doubt you’ll find a portable iPad speaker case with a subwoofer that’s easy to carry around, or lasts long enough on one charge.

Dual Headphone Jacks
Listen privately with a friend using the dual headphone outputs. If you’re plugged into the first headphone jack, or both of them, the speakers will be disabled for private listening.
